Beech Elementary
Fresh Den

In the summer of 2024, CWA Local 4009 launched a heartfelt PB&J food raising program, bringing smiles and nourishment to the wonderful students at Beech Elementary School in Redford, MI. Thanks to the generous donations from our caring members, Beech Elementary was able to secure grant funding, paving the way for the opening of The Fresh Den. This special initiative not only provides food but also offers laundry services and essential care items, ensuring that students and their families feel supported and valued. Principal Melissa Nickel expressed her gratitude through a touching thank you video, highlighting the impact of our collective efforts.

Fast forward to December 2024, the Local 4009 Committee for Human Rights & Equity once again reached out to our compassionate membership, organizing a Share the Warmth clothing drive. On January 15, Local 4009 President Jim Simons, EVP Shawn Banks, Human Rights Chair Theresa Allen Hall, and 4009 RMC S/T Faye Carey joyfully delivered several large boxes filled with socks, gloves, and hats to Principal Melissa Nickel at Beech Elementary School. In addition to these warm clothing items, we were thrilled to contribute over $900 in cash and gift cards, raised through our 50/50 raffle ticket sales throughout the year. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated CWA Local 4009 RMC members for their generous donations of clothing and cash.

According to Principal Nickel, a staggering 86% of the students at Beech Elementary live below the poverty level, a truly heartbreaking statistic. Yet, Local 4009 Officers and Members feel incredibly blessed to be in a position to bring a glimmer of hope and security to these children and their families, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles. Together, we are making a difference, one act of kindness at a time.

Focus: HOPE

This past October, CWA Local 4009's Community Service Committee organized a heartfelt event at Focus: HOPE in Detroit, Michigan, where members and their families united to pack food boxes for seniors in the surrounding areas. Their generosity and commitment to the community exemplify the true union spirit, ensuring these seniors have what they need throughout the holiday season.

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed and participated in this incredible effort. Your kindness and dedication are truly inspiring.

The Greening Of Detroit

In addition to Focus: HOPE, another program we are involved with is Greening of Detroit. The Greening of Detroit is a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the quality of life for Detroiters by planting trees, providing job training and involving our youth in the education of the natural environment.
