CWA Local 4009 Scholarships

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP TRUST

Effective September 2024: There will be one Scholarship Fund created with the sum total ($62,855) of the original three Scholarship Accounts. The Annual Scholarship Awards will be paid solely from the Scholarship Account. No General Funds will be used for Scholarship Awards.

 

ADMINISTRATION

The Scholarship Fund would be administered by the Local’s Executive Board. The scholarship funds administration will remain under the direction of the Executive Board and shall not become part of the By-Laws of the local.

 

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for a Local 4009 Scholarship Award, you must meet the following requirements: The applicant must be either:

A member or retiree of CWA Local 4009.

The husband, wife or dependent son or daughter, or other legal dependent of a member, retiree or deceased member of Local 4009.

 

The dependent shall be under the age of 27.

 

Member, for the purpose of this Scholarship, means either:

Active members in good standing at the time the application is submitted and thereafter.

Retirees who were members in good standing at the time of their retirement.

Deceased members who were in good standing at the time of their death.

 

The applicant must also be either:

A full-time student of a college, university, community college, private institute or trade school.

A high school graduate at the time of application who has been accepted at an accredited institution of higher learning.

A member who is seeking additional work-related education.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

An applicant must have a high school diploma, or the equivalent thereof, and intend to apply the Scholarship to further said applicant’s education with an accredited educational institution.  Colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade schools qualify as educational institutions.  Said institution must be accredited with a state, federal, or recognized educational accreditation agency.

 

METHOD OF SELECTION

A random drawing from a pool of eligible applicants to determine which applicants are entitled to the six yearly scholarships shall be held at a regularly scheduled membership meeting.  Runners-up shall be selected in the event the winners fail to qualify.

 

PROCEDURE FOR SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENT

An applicant awarded a Scholarship has the burden of proving to the Local Committee that said applicant is accepted and enrolled at an accredited educational institution. 

Proof of Full Time (12 credit hours) Enrollment includes any document(s) that provide the name of Institution, enrollment status and number credit hours and invoice or payment receipt.

The Committee has full power to construe the provisions of this plan.  If the Committee is satisfied that the winner meets the criteria of this plan, the Committee shall direct the Local Secy-Treasurer to issue a check to the winning applicant.

Neither the Committee nor the Local and its officers shall be liable for any action taken or omitted by them in good faith.

 

DISQUALIFICATION

The Scholarship will not be awarded to any applicant who:

Has a scholarship which pays for full tuition, room and board (full ride scholarship) to an institution of higher learning.

Is seeking a Masters or Doctorate Degree.

No other award of financial aid will be grounds for disqualification.

Applications will be reviewed by the Committee and approved before the drawing.

The winners of the Scholarship Awards must request payment no later than 180 days from the drawing date.

 

 

The Scholarship Drawings are held annually at the September General Membership Meeting.
